Greetings and salutations true believers! More useless junk of a bygone age, pulled from the maw of the scrapheap!
4 Detroit's own Velvet Peanut Butter jars, 3 of the Freezer variety plus one 3 lb Crunchy jar.
Hit an estate sale a couple of weeks back....tons of toys & clothes & dolls and such. Nothing I'm ever interested in. Off to the garage.....and behold! A plethora of aged junk just waiting to be tossed into the trash.
Being that I've got a reputation to uphold as a 1st class Nemesis....I jumped right into the fray and salvaged the only jars with paper labels intact. The 3-4 others without? Banished to the Fist of Doom....or some such forgotten nonsense!
Yes indeedy, these 4 have the labels & lids to match! Sparkling like the Sun of the effervescent 1960's!
2 with the latter day font & no 3 kids on the label...These 2 still bare the Detroit address of production.
This jar has the 3 Norberts....and the Livonia, Mi address, making it the youngest of the bunch.
And them there's this old salty dog! Older style font.....possibly early 1960's?!?
And on the back of said jar....the ultra rare ***2nd label***.....I ""know"" of another jar with a back label....but finding them is a rarity like spotting the legendary Dog-man or Bigfoot!

Detroit Rarities: More Wonders from Yesteryear
"I know this guy..." Don't we all? Well, you should. I know this guy that deals in all sorts of "Odds & Sods"...mostly the flotsam & jetsam of the past. The good stuff. The stuff you don't seem to find at either the estate or garage sale. I don't often get the chance to catch up with "the Guy", but it always pays off when I do.
1st up....the "Liar's License"....
As you can see....you can fill in the date yourself...starting with 1890....an old piece for certain.
M. B. Curtis was an actor & self made man. Hopefully he found the humor in this "license"....
Next, a J.L. Hudson's plastic "Charge Plate" in store credit card
Plastic case with "Hudson's Detroit"....and the tin "card" belonging to somebody from A2.
Next....and Vintage Channel 50 Sgt Sacto autographed card
For those of us too young to remember a mid-1960's kid show host....it's Sgt Sacto aka Detroit radio DJ Tom Ryan. Better known to genX viewers in Detroit as Count Scary! One of my best college friends Mother was his childhood neighbor! Harkens back to the glory day of Channel 50!
and lastly...a vintage bit of Coca-Cola advertising
A cardboard Santa Claus toy....toss the circle onto Santa's manly mustache. If you can find one of these the mustache is usually broken off!
Made to be given out as gifts around the holidays.....
Santa has brilliant color and is virtually spotless!
My source has set me up with some other impossible to find artifacts....truly "one-of-a-kind"....but that'll be for another day...perhaps, if I'm ever so inclined....

J. L. Hudson's Pretzel & Popcorn tins
"If it says J.L. Hudson's....somebody somewhere is collecting it."
So said the sage this weekend....in just a random conversation that I happened upon....which in turn spurred this latest blog entry.
The 1st (The Hudson's Pretzel tin) tin I happened across a couple of years back at a nearby yearly flea market/rummage sale. A couple of bucks for a Hudson's 5lb tin? You bet your sweet bippy I was buying!
Still had/has the original label....missing the nutritional value chart....so my guess would be the late 1970's to the very early 1980's.....little to no rust, a few dings and dents, and a couple of scratches....much like the rest of us.
The 2nd tin...
Found at a local estate sale...in a back room. The place had been picked over & under...yet somehow this treasure had been missed. Great shape....little to no rust, a couple of scratches & dents....A "grate" find.
Still has its small Hudson's sales tag....almost faded beyond recognition...just enough to the trained eye. I have seen the same tin downtown at an antique store in Detroit's Eastern Market.....$30+ for a tin that's rusted beyond reason and looks like its been dragged down a dirt road...no thanks. Got this one for a measly buck....right place right time. I chalk it up to clean living! HA!
The Bertels Can Co. of Wilkes-Barre Pa is still in business,,,,and has been since 1922. Just 2 more artifacts for the collection.....TO THE VAULT

A Battleship in your Christmas stocking! Rare Vintage 3lb Battleship Coffee tin
It was a rare occasion...Nosferatu & I were both on the hunt for antiques that day. He had been working "Out of State" for the past several years, making our joint efforts few and far between.
One of those sales...standing in line for ages, waiting to see if anything worth salvaging was left inside.
We made it to the area of the house with the flotsam and jetsam we seek. After much searching....I pull this beauty out of the heap....a very rare 1920's/30's era Battleship Coffee tin....produced by he Canby, Ach & Canby Co of Dayton Ohio. Some Background info for those so inclined...

Has the proper lid as well...
The bottom of the tin is even in fine shape....rare to see for a tin this aged!
For the pittance they were asking it was a steal.
Another great feature of this tin is its intended repurposing by its creators!
Great graphics, Military themed, great condition & a great price!
Just for comparison....this is what someone is asking for a similar tin currently on Ebay.

Wagner in the D: Götterdämmerung and Die Walküre LP box sets
A couple of weeks back, in town and out on the estate sale circuit, I pulled up in front of the advertised address. A townhouse...or worse, a condo. Both are the bane of estate sale junkies....at least those looking for ancient artifacts.
Both have usually been emptied of any relics...most sane folks aren't going to drag old bottles & cans to a nice new abode.
I almost turned around at the curb...but decided I'd come too far to throw in the towel. So up the stairs I went....
Exactly what I had dreaded....clothes, art, jewelry, dishware...only the most mundane pickers enjoy this drudgery.
I'd turned on my heel....on my way to the door...when I spied a room full of old LPs....why not? I owed it to myself to at least look.
A few Lps & a bunch of box sets....checked for a price....pennies on the dollar. "Brilliant!"....I'd look for an old MOTOWN box set I'm after.....no dice. But.....2 classical music sets jumped out at me....
Gotterdammerung & Die Walkure....both by the German classical composer Wilhelm Richard Wagner....the "Jimmy Page of classical music"....inside joke, stumblebums notwithstanding.
'Ol Wagner wrote operas....the story, the lyrics, the music....the whole shebang....a man before his time.
The 1st a 6 LP collection....still has the cellophane wrapping on it....with the original price tag to boot.
E. J. Korvette department store, which went out of business around 1980, was charging $25 & change for this collection...
From the looks of the boxes and LPs....neither box set have been played much, if at all....
Some kook is presently asking $300 for this box set on Ebay.....I'll have it listed in 2.2 seconds if it sells!
2nd box set...Die Walkure is a 5 LP set, also with great booklet....LPs are in pristine condition...
2 brilliant collections...for less than the cost of a Big Mac...and much more nutritious, too! Just goes to show....well, at least this time
