A Battleship in your Christmas stocking! Rare Vintage 3lb Battleship Coffee tin

It was a rare occasion...Nosferatu & I were both on the hunt for antiques that day. He had been working "Out of State" for the past several years, making  our joint efforts few and far between.
One of those sales...standing in line for ages, waiting to see if anything worth salvaging was left inside.
We made it to the area of the house with the flotsam and jetsam we seek. After much searching....I pull this beauty out of the heap....a very rare 1920's/30's era Battleship Coffee tin....produced by he Canby, Ach & Canby Co of Dayton Ohio. Some Background info for those so inclined...

THE CANBY, ACH, & CANBY COMPANY 510 East Third Street, Dayton .
Established in 1875 and employing 100 persons, this well-known Dayton concern, importers and manufacturers of coffees, teas, extracts, spices, and mustards, needs no introduction. The ever-increasing demand for the company’s goods is a sure indication that it has the unqualified endorsement of organized labor. In addition to the importing business, the firm also possesses a wide reputation through its own manufacture of coffee, peanut butter, mustard, and baking powder. Officials of the company are all progressive and popular business men. .

"Old Timey" company....and a stellar find! In very good/fine condition...
Has the proper lid as well...
The bottom of the tin is even in fine shape....rare to see for a tin this aged!
For the pittance they were asking it was a steal.
Another great feature of this tin is its intended repurposing by its creators!
Unlike the modern age, where everything is disposable...this tin was meant to be reused to store...well, beans if you would so choose!
Great graphics, Military themed, great condition & a great price!
Just for comparison....this is what someone is asking for a similar tin currently on Ebay.

Wagner in the D: Götterdämmerung and Die Walküre LP box sets

A couple of weeks back, in town and out on the estate sale circuit, I pulled up in front of the advertised address. A townhouse...or worse, a condo. Both are the bane of estate sale junkies....at least those looking for ancient artifacts.
Both have usually been emptied of any relics...most sane folks aren't going to drag old bottles & cans to a nice new abode.
I almost turned around at the curb...but decided I'd come too far to throw in the towel. So up the stairs I went....
Exactly what I had dreaded....clothes, art, jewelry, dishware...only the most mundane pickers enjoy this drudgery.
I'd turned on my heel....on my way to the door...when I spied a room full of old LPs....why not? I owed it to myself to at least look.
A few Lps & a bunch of box sets....checked for a price....pennies on the dollar. "Brilliant!"....I'd look for an old MOTOWN box set I'm after.....no dice. But.....2 classical music sets jumped out at me....

Gotterdammerung & Die Walkure....both by the German classical composer Wilhelm Richard Wagner....the "Jimmy Page of classical music"....inside joke, stumblebums notwithstanding.
'Ol Wagner wrote operas....the story, the lyrics, the music....the whole shebang....a man before his time.
The 1st a 6 LP collection....still has the cellophane wrapping on it....with the original price tag to boot.
 E. J. Korvette department store, which went out of business around 1980, was charging $25 & change for this collection...
From the looks of the boxes and LPs....neither box set have been played much, if at all....

Great booklet also with the LPS....brilliant pics & illustrations!

Some kook is presently asking $300 for this box set on Ebay.....I'll have it listed in 2.2 seconds if it sells!
2nd box set...Die Walkure is a 5 LP set, also with great booklet....LPs are in pristine condition...

2 brilliant collections...for less than the cost of a Big Mac...and much more nutritious, too! Just goes to show....well, at least this time

Hudson's & Poetry in the D: Summertime finds

Summertime in Detroit: The Sun is shinning & the humidity is climbing!
In town, between working on the road, and checking out an occasional estate sale. Thought I'd give one near my original residence a chance.
I'm interested in anything that was "....made in Detroit." From a cultural perspective as well as a personal one.
Viola! Old Detroit neighborhood....old house....what more could ya ask for?
Clothing & furniture(some very nice stuff, by the way) on the ground floor. Upstairs off limits.....no garage....so into the basement I went....with my trusty flashlight I braved the musty cellar.....
And what was waiting for me you ask? Tucked away in a secluded closet was this gem: a J. L. Hudson's bottle of "double distilled" Witch Hazel!
Label is a bit wrinkled....but in grand shape despite its buried environment...

Even the original price tag....price long ago faded into oblivion!
Another piece of DETROIT history: "Love Poem to a Black Junkie" by Paulette C. White!
Mrs. White's 1st published book of poetry....1975 1st edition.....and signed to boot!

Pulled out of an old suitcase!
And lastly...an ancient Merck & Co benzocaine medicine bottle!
Merck & Co has been around since 1891,,,and is still one of the drug companies in the world!
Benzocaine is used in cough drops & is a pain killer! Dig the "old-school" cork stopper!
I was (and still will) going to blog about some of the other relics I've come across in the past few weeks....but todays finds demanded that I give them "their due" ASAP.
